Beware of Facebook Traps

February 2010

Social media marketing is different from advertising. Rather than the usual newspaper/magazine advertising which pushes (or shouts) out the message to people, social space is about building conversations and becoming a useful part of people’s online experience. However, if you leave these online conversations in the hands of your employees you could quickly find yourself in hot water and your salon's reputation in tatters from just a few careless (or malicious) Facebook remarks.

A case in point: Virgin Atlantic had to start immediate disciplinary investigations and issue press statements strongly refuting the comments when staff postings on Facebook referred to their planes as "bangers" and alleged stewards had been bitten by cockroaches.

Ensure your content is both appropriate and legal by taking control of your Facebook page and not allowing your employees to post. A casual remark about another member of the team which offends or discriminates against them could land you with a tribunal claim. So remember the golden rule when it comes to social networks and don’t leave control with your team.

Facebook users aren't there to be sold to in a "shouty" way. It is a delicate line to tread. We've a number of salons for whom we have set up and now run a social network presence. But don't expect people to flock to your page as soon as it's published - Facebook is much more subtle.

If you'd like your salon to have a Facebook page which is regularly updated with all your latest offers and promotions as part of your retainer then please email or speak to Mark or Elly on 01386 751469.
