As part of an unprecedented move into the UK’s lucrative beauty industry, Tesco opened hair and beauty salons in Chesterfield and Leicester on Monday 31 January 2011 under the brand name ‘Your Beauty Salon’.
The salons offer a range of health and beauty services, including hair styling and colouring, waxing, manicures and threading, as well as an improved range of professional health and beauty products such as Redken and Tigi.
The salons will be separately-branded and sit within Tesco Extra outlets and offer, for example, haircuts from £12.50 and leg waxing from £10. No appointments will be needed for the services offered at these salons.
Tesco has clearly recognised the huge commercial opportunity in the health and beauty market by offering convenient, good value, popular services to their customers.
Whilst it’s been reported that Tesco is planning to open as many as 70 salons in their stores by the end of 2011, their first objective is to understand how well the new services are received by customers in the first two salons.
If Tesco’s initial plans are successful and further salons are opened it is likely to pose a competitive threat. This highlights the need for salons to continue to deliver great customer service and ensure their retail offering is spot-on.
Latest news: Tesco salons are open now at Wembley, Cambridge Bar Hill, Milton Keynes, Kingston, Manchester Walken, Leicester and Chesterfield.
